Tea Meditation for Deepam – The Festival of Light at Arunachala

Deepam in November or December is a festival that celebrates the light of Lord Shiva, symbolizing both the physical light of the lamps and the spiritual light that resides within each of us. It is a time to reflect on the divine presence of Arunachala and to honor the sacred flame that illuminates the darkness, both within and outside. As the flame grows on the hill, so does our own inner awareness and connection to the divine.

Tea: Sacred Chai for Illumination A blend of chai spices and calming herbs that connect us to the light of the Divine, helping to deepen our meditation and bring clarity to our inner journey.

Meditation Practice:

  1. Grounding and Centering:
    • Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few deep, slow breaths. Feel the warmth of the chai in your hands, grounding you into the present moment, as the light of the candle you light during this practice symbolizes your inner journey.
  2. Visualizing the Flame of Arunachala:
    • In your mind’s eye, imagine the vast, sacred flame of Arunachala rising into the sky, lighting the darkness of the night. Feel the warmth of this light surrounding you, filling every corner of your being with clarity and awareness.
    • As you sip your chai, visualize this divine light illuminating your heart, mind, and spirit, gently melting away any shadows or fears that may have clouded your path.
  3. Embracing the Light Within:
    • With each sip of chai, feel the flame within you growing stronger, representing your connection to the Divine and the awakening of your inner wisdom. Let go of any limiting beliefs or doubts that may have hindered your spiritual journey, allowing the light to clear away obstacles.
    • Reflect on the areas of your life where you wish to bring more light—whether it’s in your relationships, your work, or your spiritual practice. As you sip, affirm: “I am the light of the Divine. I embrace the wisdom and clarity that come with it.”
  4. Shining Brightly in the World:
    • Now, envision your inner light radiating outward, just as the lamps of Arunachala shine brightly in the night. See this light extending to others, spreading love, compassion, and peace in your community and the world around you.
    • Repeat the affirmation: “I share my light with the world, bringing peace, love, and illumination to all beings.”
  5. Closing the Meditation:
    • As you finish your chai, take a moment to sit quietly and feel the warmth of the light within you. Feel a sense of deep peace and clarity, knowing that the flame of Arunachala resides within you, guiding you on your spiritual path.

Personal Story of Deepam at Arunachala

While living in the foothills at the sacred mountain of Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai in South India, I experienced the festival of Karthikai Deepam, witnessing from afar the grand lighting of the lamp on top of the hill, and how the energy of the sacred mountain and the festival touched my heart witnessing the pure devotion of the locals. Villagers brought ghee, wood, and a great barrel up the steep mountain to light the flame that could be seen from miles away. The festival attracts thousands of devotees who walk barefoot around the 14km route around the hill. Deepam and the light of Arunachala symbolize the illumination of devotees’ love and path creating a transformative experience for those present.
